BOSTON TOWNSHIP

BRUSH PICK-UP: Final brush pick-ups for 2012 will be October 1st and 22nd.

LEAF PICK-UP: Leaf pick-up begins October 15th.

EAD: the Trustees are continuing to finalize plans for the Economic Activity District. A public hearing was held on August 22, 2012 and following the hearing the Trustees voted to accept the text amendments as approved by the zoning commission.

DONATIONS: The Trustees gratefully accepted donations from Dave Hazelwood who lives on Wetmore Road and the Conservancy for the NPS. Mr. Hazelwood’s donation was the result of an article in YCN suggesting that people living in homes now owned by the NPS and not paying property taxes make a donation to offset the lack of taxes. The Conservancy donation was for the Trail Mix.

ROAD CLOSURE REQUESTS: The CVNP has requested that Summit County Council delay the closure of Oak Hill and Wetmore Roads through the next snow season. The city of Cuyahoga Falls is on record opposing these closures, but should the closures happen they are asking Summit County Council to mandate several conditions. Impacting the Township would be 25% of costs that would include construction of two 96’ diameter turning circles and lighting on Oak Hill. The next meeting of Summit County Council will be on December 3, 2012.

From the Mayor

I would like to start by saying thank you for allowing me to be your mayor. It has been an honor. This year started by ending the police chief lawsuit. We are now in the process of hiring a new chief. The council and I also hired a new solicitor, Irving Sugerman and his firm. Mr. Sugerman brings a high level of expertise and needed experience to the Village. I met with the City of Stow and their zoning department and we are now using them instead of Summit County as our building department. Stow has been doing an excellent job and has been profitable for the Village. As you know, we were having problems with our road equipment over the past few years. I asked Tom Cooper of Stine Road and Skip Ausperk of Boston to help me out and they did in a very big way. They repaired the backhoe, chipper and leaf machine saving the Village thousands of dollars. Skip also kept the big trucks running through the winter and helped plow snow at the end of winter. Skip was hired full time in June. Thanks go out to both of these men! Due to the light winter and the money that was saved by all departments, John Stiegel and I came up with a way to buy a new (used) truck for the road Department. The truck is here and it is paid for. My staff has been going through and organizing all the records, putting records on computer files, preparing paper records for storage, and getting ordinances for codification. This is a major project; everyone has been working together, and there is light at the end of the tunnel. My goal has been to start at the bottom and work forward. As I like to say, restock or rebuild the tool box so everyone can do their job the right way with the right tools. I’m not trying to change the world, but to maintain our Village, the Village that won the Best Hometown to live in by Ohio Magazine. Always looking for new ideas and for your support 330-657-2151. PEDDLER’S DAY
OCTOBER 1, 2011

Peddler’s Day is October 1, 2011. Please contact Mary Booth, 330-657-2244, to get your name and sale location on the Peddler’s Day Map. When you see Nina this year, please be sure to tip your hat. Nina is not sure when she organized the first Peninsula Garage Sale Day at the behest of then Mayor Dick Fisher and Councilwoman Carol Wright, but it has been “about 30 years ago now”. She does know that 12 years ago she re-named it Peninsula Peddler’s Day. It has since grown to be an endearing annual event. Throughout these years, Nina carried the torch for us peddlers, organized us, paid the advertising, and made the map. We have had a lot of fun, sold some stuff, and literally created village traditions around this day. Some say they love it more than Thanksgiving (you know who you are!). Nina says she is retiring from Peddler Day, so just in case she means it: THANK YOU, NINA! And Wayne, thank you too!

BOSTON MILLS - LEAVE IT ALONE!!!

Lily Tomlin said, "No matter how cynical I get, it is never enough".

On December 27, 1974, the Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area was established to loud fanfare as a means to "preserve" the Cuyahoga Valley. Locals felt "If we did such a poor job of preserving the valley, why did the Department of the Interior want to buy it?"

In the ensuing years about 400 families were "preserved" right out of their homes, Their homes were destroyed and their property taken off the tax docket. This hurt our township, our schools, and our county.

The Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area became the Cuyahoga Valley National Park on October 11, 2000. They didn't seem to be able to make up their minds what they wanted to call it.

Only about eight percent of the township remains in private ownership, and these poor residents who own their properties have the dubious privilege of providing the schools, police, fire, roads, and rescue services for the rest of the township.

It’s like finding out that you have a new dependent in your home……your own government.

In the Wednesday, September 5, 2012 issue of the Akron Beacon Journal, Bob Downing's article "New Blueprint For The Park Land" tells how our quaint and historic Boston Mills area across from the Boston Mills Ski Run will be transformed into the National Park's version of Disneyland. More tax paying residents, our neighbors, will lose their homes as a result of the new enlarged parking areas and a campground on Latta Lane. This is despite Superintendent Birdsell's promise that there would be no overnight camping in the park.

The proposed plan is available at parkplanning.nps.gov/bostonplan.

No input was invited from either the Boston Township Trustees or the zoning board, but our already strapped remaining residents will be expected to pony up the money for all the increased community services to provide for the additional visitors.

If you are opposed to the commercialization of the Boston Mills Area, please write to: Superintendent, Cuyahoga Valley National Park, 15610 Vaughn Road, Brecksville, OH 44141 and please copy Boston Township Trustees, PO Box 123, Peninsula, OH 44264.

PENINSULA VALLEY HISTORIC & EDUCATION FOUNDATION

In case you have missed the good news, Peninsula will be featured in the November edition of Ohio Magazine as a “Best Hometown 2012-13!” The village was nominated by the Foundation and selected as the regional winner of this contest on August 24th. Congrats to all!

Join us on September 29th from 5-8pm at the G.A.R. Hall for a wine bar with live music and dancing, featuring the music of John Boston. Bring hors d’oeuvres and a basket to share.

The Foundation is celebrating its 50 years of historic preservation in Peninsula by creating “Before & After” plaques for village buildings. These plaques are now located inside shops, restaurants, and galleries and reveal the beautiful setting that our community has produced in making welcome families, friends, and visitors today. Take a peek and see what memories and stories these prompt. Stories to be shared would be most welcomed by our staff in documenting the rich valley history; paper forms for these are available at each destination.

The G.A.R. Hall will host a unique quilt show Hands, Hearts & Homes: Quilts of the Cuyahoga Valley from November 1-4, 2012. Planned with a local theme, it will feature quilts made in or the heirlooms of Cuyahoga Valley families. Beverages and homemade refreshments will be available on the lower level of the hall. Admission is a $3.00 donation at the door from 11:00am to 5:00pm. A new local quilt will be raffled. A wine and cheese preview night will be held Thursday, November 1st from 6:00-8:00pm with an $8.00 admission. Come join us for this special quilt event!

TOTAL BODY FITNESS

Has summer come and gone and you still can’t fit in that bathing suit? Would you like to work out in a private space, nestled amid the tree tops, with fun, vibrant trainers, no membership fees, one-on-one training tailored to your body and your desired results? Total Body Fitness located at 6138 Riverview Road in Peninsula is the answer. Of the four women I know personally who work out at Total Body Fitness, we have three things in common: we all hated to exercise, liked to laugh, didn’t really believe our bodies could change, but we were driven by guilt to go through the motions. Without realizing it, the weeks passed and we are all pounds lighter, inches smaller, and are motivated to show up (at least twice sometimes three times a week) because we have fun…and always have genuine laughs.

Do yourself a favor – physically and emotionally – call Carlean 216-470-4309 and Natalie 330-657-2963 or 330-730-3355 at Total Body Fitness and start transforming your body and your life.
