PENINSULA VILLAGE
News from the October 11, 2010 council meeting:
Even though Village employees hired prior to January 1, 2001 will not be getting a “raise,” Council voted to pick up 5% of the employee contribution to the state retirement plan. Although employees will likely have to pay state and local taxes on the pickup contribution, they will be exempt from federal income taxes. Both the Village and employees benefit with this alternative, as it is less costly than a 5% wage increase. Mid-November is the target date to be effective.
Council voted to purchase two radar guns for the Peninsula Police Department that are capable of measuring speed from both the front and rear of the cruiser. Having two similar units already in use the police department is ready to implement the new guns as they are already trained.
The status or demise of the Players Barn is still foregoing with Mayor Fisher advising Council to be certain of its plans before he goes back to the Cuyahoga Valley National Park regarding trading land for the barn. Councilwoman Mary Booth informed council that residents are objecting to proposed uses of the barn. Council President Doug Anderson pointed out that the building condition is deteriorating although residents protesting have not come up with a solution. He will give it one more month for the likelihood of a tenant before council will act.
Council is currently working on five grants with the CVNP for funding in 2011 to improve roads, repair and replace catch basins and replace retaining walls along sidewalks.
