HUMAN DIGNITY 2012

There has been much said in the media regarding religious freedom. How much of this reflects the perception and understanding of the readers of YCN or American citizens in general? What are your thoughts “…that the human person has a right to religious freedom. This freedom means that all men are to be immune from coercion on the part of individuals or of social groups and of any human power, in such wise that no one is to be forced to act in a manner contrary to his own beliefs, whether privately or publicly, whether alone or in association with others, within due limits..”* With the celebration of the Fourth of July and the 236th anniversary of our Nation’s birth upon us, when we mark our belief that we live in a land where life, liberty and pursuit of happiness are among our inalienable rights…how is it possible that an agency of our government can mandate policies that are contrary to the rights of citizens of this great Republic, …one nation under God with liberty and justice for all? Perhaps this year in particular as we gather for picnics and other holiday events, it would be imperative that we reflect upon and dialogue about the meaning of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the history of our Nation. How are we upholding our freedoms, rights, and the human dignity of each person in this great land? How is it being eroded and how are our rights being violated under the guise of policy? What is the position of our elected representatives? What will our response be?* Dignitatis Humanae Document on Religious Freedom, Vatican II Ecumenical Council, paragraph 2.
