MEMORIAL DAY REMINDER

Typically, here in Northeastern Ohio, when we hear that Memorial Day is coming our thoughts turn to picnics, camping, gardening and all sorts of outdoor activities. And for most of us, we get an extra day off from our work.

I would like to disrupt that thinking and take a moment to remind ourselves (including me) that Memorial Day was created to honor those who are no longer with us because they were killed in the line of duty of protecting and preserving the freedoms we enjoy. Yet in our passion for commemorating the day, it sometimes gets morphed into honoring the living, even though it was not created for that. There are plenty of days that are set aside to honor the living.

One reason (I am sure there are more) for setting aside a day to remember those who have fallen is to think about their sacrifice which could, in turn, inspire someone to consider making a sacrifice of service of their own to preserve our freedoms. I am not sure how many of you know (I didn`t) but in 2000, Congress passed the National Moment of Remembrance Act, asking people to stop and remember at 3:00 PM on Memorial Day. Might be worth setting an alarm to do that. Just thought you might need a reminder as I did. God bless.
